100 Years of Forestry at The University of Montana
March 21, 1913
Forestry School Approved
On March 21 the state authorized the creation of the School of Forestry at the University of Montana-Missoula.
October 5, 1917
Foresters Enlist in Army
School of Forestry Dean Dorr Skeels, faculty and students join a special unit in the Army Corps of Engineers made up entirely of foresters. The unit was sent to France to harvest timber for the war effort.
September 25, 1924
Thomas Claude Spaulding, Dean, School of Forestry
First UM graduate to serve as dean of the school.
June 4, 1928
First woman graduates from School of Forestry
Josephine Darlington of Missoula was the first woman to graduate from the UM with a BS in Forestry. She also earned a degree in Botany.
