Mike Mansfield - In His Own Words

This digital collection consists of speeches by, statements of, and interviews with Mike Mansfield. They span his career as a candidate, legislator and ambassador. The earliest document is from 1939 and the latest from 1988; the majority of the content is from the 1940s to the 1970s.

The files digitized for this online collection were drawn from three different series of the extensive archival collection of Mike Mansfield Papers held at The University of Montana’s Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library:

Series XXI: House/ Senate Speeches and Reports (1351 files)
This portion of the collection consists primarily of drafts and copies of speeches Mansfield made. Testimony for House and Senate hearings, transcripts of radio and television broadcasts, and press releases from Mansfield's office also appear in these files. There are also copies of speeches, testimony, and press releases from other members of Montana's Congressional delegation. These files range in date from 1939 to 1976.

Series XXII: Senate Leadership - Subseries 5: Speeches, Trips and Reports (110 files)
Like the files in Series XXI, this portion of Series XXII includes drafts and copies of speeches Mansfield made, transcripts of radio and television broadcasts, and press releases from Mansfield's office. These files date from 1959 to 1976. There is some duplication of content with the files in Series XXI.

Series XXXII: Ambassador Speeches (149 files)
This series consists of typescript texts of speeches that Mansfield gave at meetings, seminars, and ceremonies as ambassador. The speeches are, in most cases, typed on press release stationary, but are simply the text of the speech. Some are annotated. Most have the date, place, and occasion for the speech's delivery, but not all. A few are accompanied by programs and clippings about the event. These files cover the time from 1976 to 1988.
