Title
Letter from Herbert Lehman to James Murray dated December 21, 1951
Description
This letter from Senator Herbert Lehman of New York to Senator James Murray of Montana illustrates Murray's support for the Lehman-Humphrey immigration bill (S. 2343), a more liberal alternative to the bill proposed by Senator Pat McCarran of Nevada and Representative Francis Walter of Pennsylvania. While President Truman vetoed the McCarran-Walter bill in favor of more progressive reform, the Lehman-Humphrey bill lacked the support to pass through Congress. Congress ultimately overrode Truman's veto and the McCarran-Walter bill was enacted as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.
