Title
Letter from Senator James Murray to the American Legion, 1956
Description
In this letter, Senator James Murray expresses concerns regarding the McCarran-Walter Act (also known as the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1952). Before the bill became law, Murray opposed it in favor of a more liberal immigration bill proposed by Senators Herbert Lehman (New York) and Hubert Humphrey (Minnesota). In this letter, Murray endorses an amendment to the Act (S. 1206), which would provide legal immigrants more avenues through which to fight or resist deportation. One the primary problems at the center of this debate is the immigration of refugees from Eastern Europe that fled to Western Europe after during the expansion of Communism after World War II. While supporters of McCarran-Walter were cautious not to expose the United States to foreign ideologies and potential subversives, critics, such as Murray, believed that welcoming refugees would bolster America's moral standing vis-a-vis the Soviet Union and other Communist countries.
