Title
Letter from Senator James Murray to Reverend G. Beutler, 1953
Description
In this letter, Senator James Murray expresses his support for what is currently known as the Refugee Relief Act of 1953. This act allowed the immigration of 214,000 immigrants and was intended to provide for the legal passage of Southern Europeans and escapees from Eastern Bloc nations. The act was necessitated by quotas established by the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1952 that would have otherwise prevented the admission of many of the immigrants covered by the act.
