On the evening of July 13, Garrison returned to the fire with six newly hired firefighters. By then, the fire on the east side had grown to a size of 80 acres and the fire on west side was 10 acres. The men soon became "frustrated by the wind rising and blowing cinders and flames over the line." Two days later Barringer returned with "fourteen men and a pack team."

Over the next two weeks, the men fought the fire, cut trail and continued to move camp as needed. Despite their efforts, on the morning of July 24 the fire on the east side of Grave Creek had grown and now covered five hundred acres. Luckily, the fire on the west side was practically extinguished. Barringer again left to get more supplies and men.
