June 1968

Goedicke's June 11th entry was the last in its notebook.  Below is the first entry in the next notebook. In this draft, one begins to see the framework for the finished poem.  Gone are the lilacs and most of the overt references to the Robert Kennedy assassination.  Here, the poem is framed at the beginning by the speaker's descent to the sea and at the end by the revelatory conclusion that "we must build more on less."
