In 1965 plans to formalize the historic entrance to campus at Arthur and University Avenue were presented by landscape architect Theodore J. Wirth. The plans included a brick mall on University Avenue between Maurice and Arthur Avenues, and the construction of a stone structure “depicting the university name and motto.” The James H.T. Ryman Fund provided the money for the new entrance. Ryman, a local banker, was a founding member of the university. Construction of the mall began in 1966 using recycled bricks from Higgins Avenue. In 1969 University Avenue between Maurice and Arthur was closed to vehicle traffic and renamed James H.T. Ryman Mall. A bronze plaque is set in the west end of the mall acknowledging Ryman.
