In 1991, UM began to develop a new mascot. Two years later, in the fall of 1993, Monte, short for Montana, made his debut. Monte’s costume has changed over the years to accommodate more aerobatic tricks. In 2002 and 2004, Monte won the Capitol One Mascot of the year competition.
