Cocoa 1960
The last live bear to serve as UM mascot arrived in Missoula in the fall of 1960. The bear, named Cocoa, was on loan for the football season from the Montana Fish and Game Department. Cocoa was a seven-month-old, male black bear that weighed 65 pounds. He was found alone by game wardens in Hall, Montana. During his time as mascot, Cocoa was kept in a cage at the Missoula County Fairgrounds. Cocoa was to be set free or sent to a zoo at the end of the football season.
